Blog Stalking and Whiney Thoughts

Hello, my name is MomvsChaos, and I’m a blog stalker. Whew. Glad we got that out of the way! The first step is admitting you have a problem, right? :)

I follow several blogs on the Pulse App on my iPhone, and come across many, many more on my various Google searches each day. But I have never commented on a blog. I’m not really sure why, because if I follow a blogger on Facebook, I may comment there. Just never on a blog.

The irony here is crazy, because the I started this blog for only two reasons: to have something that was for me in a life filled with small children, and (more importantly) as a way to communicate with like-minded women.

Most (if not all) of the blogs I have discovered are blogs of women who are a lot like me. So what gives?

I guess I’m lazy. But also insanely jealous. That’s right. J.e.a.l.o.u.s. I struggle with wanting my blog to be cleverly written with lovely pictures like this friend, or be full of deep insights and minimalist love like this one, or full of really useful information, like this one. Of course, in my right mind, I remember that I’m trying to avoid chaos, and if I had the time (or camera) to take lovely pictures or do some fancy HTML work, I would totally do it. Someday, I probably will find the time (or make the time), but if it was really important to me (like going to the gym), I would do it. I guess the bigger point is, I want other people to think I can do it all as a Mom and have witty, insightful, well-researched blog with fancy pictures.

Truth is, I’m doing what I have time for. I’m doing what makes me fulfilled without adding chaos. I do resolve, however, to start commenting on blogs I visit- even if it’s just a quick note. Maybe you’ll do the same?

Recipe: Paleo Apple Chicken Sausage Salad

My first delivery from Urban Orbanic arrives tomorrow.  While I wait patiently, I am trying to go through my refrigerator and use what we have to make room for the fresh produce.  I’ve been dying to try the Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage I bought on a whim, but I wasn’t really sure what to do with it.  I started asked my friend Google, and came up with the recipe below.  It.Was.Ah.Mazing.

Paleo Apple Chicken Sausage Salad

  • 1 Red Onion
  • 1 Package Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage (or regular chicken breast diced and cooked through, if you can’t find/don’t have this sausage.  It won’t be as delicious, but it will still work)
  • Olive Oil
  • Sea Salt & Pepper to taste
  • 1 Large or 2 Small Granny Smith Apple(s)
  • Feta Cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 C Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 C Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 Tbs Dijon Mustard

Turn on oven broiler. Slice red onion thinly. Place sliced onions and sausage rounds on cookie sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper. Broil for 5-8 minutes. If placing on top rack, pay extra close attention or you’ll burn it! While onion and sausages broil, slice or dice granny smith apple(s). Pour olive oil, lemon juice, dijon mustard, and salt and pepper into a carafe (or if you’re fancy like me, a Ziploc Twist-n-lock 2 cup bowl). Shake vigorously until well mixed. Your sausage and onion should be done by now- remove from oven and let cool to room temperature. While cooling, put greens in bowl and add feta and apples. Once cool, add sausage, onion, and dressing.

This recipe was inspired in part of in whole by this recipe.

Minimalist Monday: Changing table, shmanging table

If you follow my blog, you know I have four kids, and three are three and under. When Champ was born, the oldest boy, Carl, wasn’t quite potty-trained at 32 months, so I had three little boys in diapers.

For a long time, we had a changing table downstairs AND a changing table upstairs in the oldest boys bedroom. Neither table held everything we needed, and I kept thinking it was more convenient to have one on each floor. Several months ago while I was donating and downsizing things, I decided to get rid of the downstairs changing table completely, and move a long dresser into the hallway upstairs.

This isn’t a beautiful photograph, and it’s nothing fancy, but I tell you what…it was brilliant! Each of the top three drawers holds enough diapers/pull-ups/underwear and there’s space on top for wipes and such. I also have a drawer for extra supplies, and each boy is designated a drawer where I have outfits for the week. Super simple.

If you have more than one child in diapers, using only one changing table (or dresser) and keeping it *outside* the bedroom(s) is great…especially if your kids share rooms!

Minimalist Monday: Pajamas are Overrated

I do a load of laundry every day. I’ve cut back on the volume of clothing my kids and I have, but it’s still a work in progress.

As I was switching out the kids clothes now that warmer weather is approaching (and they are growing like weeds and need to change sizes), it dawned on me… do my boys even need pajamas?

I guess it’s easier to consider a “pajama free plan” this time of year with the temperature rising (slowly, but hey, it’s better than snow). So, for the past week, I have put the two youngest boys to bed in their onesies (yes, my two-year old wears a onesie- you try keeping a diaper on a 26-month old), and my three-year old in his nighttime pull-up (or underwear, we’re working on that) and a white undershirt. This also helps the oldest guy feel like Daddy, because that’s what Daddy sleeps in (sans pull-up, lol).

Of course, the “pajama free plan” isn’t so simple for Lizzy. During the summer, she tends to want to sleep in a t-shirt and underwear too, but that’s because we don’t have AC in our rental.  Also, last Summer, she was only seven; this summer she’s gonna be eight, and, well, that might as well be twenty-two! I have a feeling Lizzy may feel like covering up a bit more now that she’s aging.  Do little girls still wear undershirts? I remember wearing these really thin tank tops under my clothes around her age until I started wearing a training bra.  Maybe I should get her some of those.  And a few pairs of comfy cotton shorts for lounging around the house in lieu of pajamas.  Maybe. Or maybe she’ll wears pajamas because she’s the princess and occasionally gets to do things differently than her brothers because she has three brothers under three.  I’m not sure yet.

Now on to me. . .First of all, I don’t think my kids would appreciate me marching around in my underwear and a t-shirt.  Let’s just get that our there .  Second, while  I rarely sleep in pajamas, I do, however, have pajamas that I put on after my evening shower and wear until I get in bed and for a brief period in the morning before I get dressed. But WHY? I know that my day is much more productive and runs more smoothly if I get dressed immediately upon rising.  Maybe the “pajama free plan” is just what I need to force myself to get dressed first thing every morning.  Note to self: it is totally okay to get dressed and made-up hours apart.  Getting “ready” for the day doesn’t have to happen all at once!

What about the winter, you ask? I don’t know.  I think we’ll probably do exactly what we’re trying now, but add some sweatpants and socks to the mix.  Or maybe we will need pajamas to handle the East Coast in the Winter…who knows.

The truth is, going without pajamas it isn’t just about laundry.  It’s about everyone needing to get dressed in the morning.  I think it will make us remember we have stuff to do.  The fun, messy, busy, crazy, stuff we call life.  And yes, sometimes that stuff is fun to do inside all day in our pajamas.  Now, I’m not saying we won’t have pajama days, but they will be pajama days because I’ve announced that we aren’t getting dressed for the day and are doing fun pajama day-y things, not just because we never got around to getting dressed.

I hope this works.  It’s been a week, and it’s going swimmingly. So, if we actually need pajamas one season out of the year, that’s okay.  We will have established better habits for getting ready for the day and there will be a lot less laundry for three out of four seasons.  And, I’ll get to take cute pictures of my kids sleepy-eyed wearing matching pajamas like this one.

Win-Win-Win.

Favorite Easy Meal

I would love to say that I make all of my meals from fresh vegetables. In fact, some day, I would love to be able to do that. Unfortunately, time is a huge factor for me with such young kids. I’m converting from a mostly vegan diet to a mostly Paleo diet, so vegetables are the main focus of my meals, with some added meat instead of rice or pasta like I used to add. Hard core Paleo diet enthusiasts may not like this recipe because it incorporates a very small amount of feta cheese. I’m trying to keep my meals about 80% Paleo, so this works for me. As for the vegetables, I realize the ingredients are not just vegetables, but again, it fits the 80% rule and is great for transition.

Easy Veggie & Steak Bowl:

-Two boxes “Green Giant Antioxidant Blend” frozen vegetables

-1/4 cup steak

-2 tbs finely crumbled feta

Garlic pepper to taste

Enjoy!
